René Jacobs (* 30. Oktober 1946 in Gent) ist ein belgischer Dirigent und Countertenor.Jacobs studierte Philologie an der Universität Gent und nahm gleichzeitig Gesangsunterricht bei Louis Devos und Alfred Deller. Bevor er sich ganz der Musik zuwandte, war er drei Jahre Lehrer für Latein und Griechisch. 1977 gründete er das Vocalensemble Concerto Vocale Gent.Jacobs ist bekannt als Spezialist für Alte Musik und Opern des Barock. Seine jüngsten Aufnahmen der Opern Mozarts werden als revolutionär bezeichnet.(Quelle?) Er arbeitet unter anderem mit den besten Orchestern und Ensembles wie dem Concerto Köln, der Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, dem Nederlands Kamerkoor, dem Freiburger Barockorchester und dem RIAS Kammerchor zusammen.Seit 1988 dirigiert Jacobs beim Centre de musique baroque de Versailles. Ausserdem unterrichtete er an der Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. 1991 wurde er der künstlerische Leiter des Barockmusikfestivals von Innsbruck.Als Dirigent vervollständigte er die Instrumentenstimmen und die Verzierung der Gesangsstimmen bei mehreren Barockopern. 2005 erhielt er den Classical Grammy Award für die beste Operneinspielung mit der Hochzeit des Figaro von Mozart.

French countertenor Dominique Visse has participated in the early music revival in France since its inception. Although he became a chorister at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris at the age of 13, he pursued studies on organ and flute at the Versailles Conservatory. As an instrumentalist, he developed an interest in medieval and Renaissance repertories, only occasionally singing as a countertenor. It was only after studies with Alfred Deller and René Jacobs between 1976 and 1978 that he decided to specialize in singing. In 1978, he founded the Ensemble Clément Janequin and joined the newly formed period-instrument group Les Arts Florissants under William Christie. In 1982, he made his opera debut at Tourcoing in Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea.

Belgian conductor Philippe Herreweghe, in addition to studying piano with Marcel Gazelle at the Conservatory in Ghent, concurrently studied medicine and psychiatry at the University of Ghent. During that time, he founded the Collegium Vocale of Ghent (1969). Nikolaus Harnocourt and Gustav Leonhardt took notice of the young artist and promptly invited him and his newly organized ensemble, to collaborate with them in a recording project that would document the entire catalog of Bach cantatas. Continuing his education at the conservatory, Herreweghe studied the harpsichord with Johan Huys and organ with Gabriel Verschraegen.Ambitious to say the least, Herreweghe formed numerous ensembles that each respectively acted as a performance vehicle for specific genres and periods of composition, resulting in numerous recordings for Harmonia Mundi.
