In the 18th century those courts used to have a so-called Harmoniemusik, a group of windplayers plus double-bass instead of a full orchestra and it was the Harmoniemusik at Morzine's for which Haydn wrote his 8 Divertimenti. They are also called Feldparthien which indicates that - at most of he serenades or cassationes - this music is designed to be played open-air.

Diego Ortiz is important to history not only as a leading Spanish composer of the Renaissance era, but also as the author of Trattado di glosas, the first printed instruction book about ornamentation for bowed string orchestras. This was an international success, and was published in Italian. The book contains entirely written-out ornamentations designed to fit specific time periods. The player is directed to determine which was most appropriate, and to write it into his part at the right spot. Furthermore, the work contains studies for bass instruments, treble viol, and keyboard, as well as some madrigals. Like most authentic books on ornamentation and instruction of the period, it is a valuable source of information on performing style of the time.Not much is known about Ortiz's life. The two versions of his book were published simultaneously (in December 1553) while he was in Naples in the service of Pedro de Urries, a Spaniard who was Duke of Riesi, Sicily. The Italian edition is full of Spanish turns of phrases, which suggests that it was prepared by Ortiz himself, and that the writer had been resident in the Spanish-ruled Italy for some time.By February 1558 he was named maestro de cappella for Fernando Alvarez de Toledo, Duke of Alba and the Spanish Viceroy of Naples, and kept that position (or perhaps was rehired for it after a hiatus) by the next Viceroy, Pedro Afán de Rivera, Duke of Alcalá, to whom he dedicated his Musices liber primer, which includes some Magnificat settings, all based on plainchants.

André Jolivet (1905-1974) was French music's most sophisticated primitivist. While conducting advanced experiments with rhythm and sonority, Jolivet also found inspiration in the magic arts of equatorial realms and the primitive aspects of such instruments as the flute and percussion. He declared that he was dedicated to restoring music's original ancient sense, as the magical and incantatory expression of the religiosity of human communities.Interested in drama, painting, and literature in his youth, Jolivet eventually turned to music, studying cello and music theory at Notre Dame de Clignancourt. At 15, he wrote a ballet, and designed its set and costumes. His parents, who were artists, urged him to take up teaching, a more secure profession than composing. Nevertheless, in 1928, after a brief pedagogical career, Jolivet began an intense study of compositional technique under Paul Le Flem. In 1930, Jolivet fell under the spell of avant-garde composer Ernest Chausson:If Marcel Proust had written music, it might have sounded something like Ernest Chausson's: intensely passionate, yet rarely given to grand gestures. The effectiveness of Chausson's ardent, even erotic, musical language derives largely from the slithery chromatic style the composer inherited from his most important teacher, César Franck. Not a prolific composer, Chausson died in 1899, at the age of 44, from injuries sustained in a bicycle accident. Chausson's death silenced the most distinctive voice in French music in the generation immediately preceding Debussy's indeed, Chausson's music forms an elegant, if swaying, bridge between Franck's lush, Wagnerian Romanticism and the sensuous Impressionist language of Debussy. Chausson came from a well-to-do family in fact, comfortable circumstances throughout his entire life made it unnecessary for him to pursue a living as a musician.

The female vocal quartet called Anonymous 4 has become one of the most popular and respected small vocal groups specializing in early music. The group has attained the elusive combination of popularity and respect through its unique blend of creativity and scholarly/historical depth.The name Anonymous 4 comes from a scholarly convention for designating anonymous medieval writers and scribes with numbers working with a particular manuscript by the scribe known as Anonymous 4, they found it an ideal name for their new quartet. The group was formed in 1986. Its purpose was to experiment with the sound of medieval music (both chant and polyphony) as sung by higher voices. Its four members are all singers of considerable beauty of tone, range, and flexibility, but all of them had nontraditional backgrounds to one extent or another. Marsha Genensky, originally a folk singer, earned an M.A. in Folklore and Folklife from the University of Pennsylvania.
